Ahhhhh yessssss... SATURDAY!!!

This guy... the one typing this right this moment... has come to LOVE Saturdays!!! :)  It is my own slice of a weekend that only comes once a week over here... and with each one that comes and goes is one week closer to getting back home!  These are the days that make the rest of the week worthwhile.  You work hard and bust your tail for 6 days... and you're rewarded with Saturday!

Getting home will be its own reward once that finally happens.  It's really within sight now, too!  I mean... in only 2 weeks and a day it will be Super Bowl Sunday!  With that said... the date is Feb. 6th.  That will put me down to just over a month from leaving here!  Now there's some perspective for ya!  That is a wondeful feeling.  Just think... I will only have 7 more of these "Saturdays" left here.  Now that brings to light some thoughts.

I really need to start looking at cleaning house and getting stuff ready to go!  I also need to get on the ball with finding a place to live when I get back!  That time is coming, and apartments need to know these things in advance!  I can't wait to have all my stuff back... especially my car!  I'm looking forward to my first drive to wherever in my car when I get back.  That will be awesome!  :)

As for now... walking is just fine for just about everywhere I traverse this desert base.  It gives me lots of exercise and has definitely played a huge part in the 13 or so pounds I've lost since I've been here.  I'm not discounting all the long and intense running workouts I've done, however, I think the change from riding to walking was the thing that really pushed me over the top.  I also have something to add to this post later on today that is going to be PHENOMENAL!!!  This may turn out to be my best blogger day ever by the end of the day...

Right now... I'm playing a little poker and chillin' in my room.  In 45 minutes it's pizza time!!!  I will be back with another post soon... STAY TUNED!!!

Walking IS good exercise!!!!

I think it's funny how some people simply scoff at the fact that I think a good walk is sufficient for a "workout".  It is the commonplace attitude of MANY military members, though.  You MUST exercise at a higher intensity in order for it to be beneficial!!!  If you don't RUN... and faster than whatever time it is that you normally run in... then you're not REALLY working out.  Or if you don't lift weights... or do P90X or some other crackpot gimmicky workout then you might as well not do anything.

BULLSHIT!

In fact, walking is extremely beneficial to your individual well-being and is one of the best fat burning exercises you can do.  Sure, higher intensity = higher burn.  An idiot can figure that out... however, it's the long slow distance training (known as LSD in the fitness world) that truly burns the fat.  60 minutes of walking at a moderately fast pace (3.5-4.5 mph) will get you quite a bit of results if you do it regularly.  In fact, it's the ideal recovery workout for the day after a good run when your body's not quite ready to go at it full throttle again.

There are a number of testimonials in regards to "walking yourself thin" that are available for your reading enjoyment simply by visiting google.com and typing those words into the search box.  You'd be surprised how much good has come from just putting one foot in front of the other regularly.  Of course, I don't listen to the nay sayers anyway.  I couldn't care less what others say about what I'm doing.  I know what works for ME, and that's all that really matters in the whole scheme of things.

I am feeling MUCH better that I'm back to running, however!  See... I do my share of higher intensity work... I just can't nor should I do it every single day.  I got in nearly 4 miles running yesterday... I'd say that's pretty damn good from where I'm sitting.  I hadn't even run but once in almost 3 weeks time.  Hmmm... I guess I'm not in too bad of shape... perhaps when I step on the scale next time it will agree with me.  :)

I have found some relaxation this week...

... and you know what... I LOVE IT!  It's very relaxing to sit and listen to music and simply relax in the evenings as I've done a few times this week.  I've always known that listening to music... or singing... has always been something that's relaxing for me, yet the whole time I've been here I didn't break out my Ipod and charge it until recently.  Why the hell did I wait so long???  This is so enjoyable right now!

I'm currently listening to some old John Michael Montgomery (honestly... I haven't heard anything NEW by him in ages) and debating what I'm going to listen to next.  Now that's a rough evening right there!  :)  It's nice to feel mellow without any stress weighing you down, though.  I even broke out the Danish butter cookies my friend Tyler sent me in a package for Christmas.  I think between my roommate and I we must have eaten over a dozen of them.  They are sooooooooooooooo good!!!!

I also had a very good workout this afternoon (running/jogging/walking).  I ran for 39 minutes and walked for 30.  It feels so good to be getting back to normal again!  The head thing is still healing, but there are no more bandages anymore and no more bleeding, etc.  It's closed up and only a scab and some swelling remains around it.  :)  I have only 2 more days of antibiotics left... but I think I'm going to swing by the doc's on Saturday and see if they think I should take them for one more week.  I'm not yet convinced that this thing is completely gone yet, and I sure as hell don't want it coming back!!!!  I'm determined to beat it!

Well... I know this was kind of a short post, but I'm going to stick to my plan for tonight and get to bed early again.  Perhaps I'm trying to save a couple hours of extra sleep in the "bank" because there's a certain football game I'll be getting up at 2:30 AM on Monday morning to watch... I believe the PITTSBURGH STEELERS are playing for a trip to the SUPER BOWL!!!!  Oh yeah!!!!  They better beat those J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS this time!  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!! You better believe the Terrible Towel will be flying!!!! HERE WE GO STEELERS!!! HERE WE GO!!!! PITTSBURGH'S GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL!!!

Ok... ok... I got a little excited there.  LOL  It happens sometimes.  Goodnight all!  See you in Bloggerville tomorrow...

Getting ever so close yet again...

... to that precious day off!  Yes... it's true... it's already Wednesday, and Saturday awaits right around the corner from it.  I am still having a tough time believing just how fast the days go by here.  It is a ridiculous pace!  It seems like hours pass by like minutes... days like hours... etc.  I don't even think my days off go by as fast as the days I work, which is the complete opposite of normal! LOL

Today is the first Wednesday that we switched the schedule a little... it doesn't really change the amount of time I sit in the 2 locations... just the time of day.  I am feeling indifferent about it honestly.  It's no biggie either way.  I have enough snacks with me to amount to a midday meal, but I'll still go eat between 3 and 4 during my hour I have before I sit in the command post for the last 3 hours of the day.  The way I see it... it's most likely going to make the day go by that much faster.  I only have one hour until my shift on scope starts.  Before you know it... it will be 7 o'clock... and I'll be rolling out the door.

It is still like Groundhog Day, though.  There is very little change from day to day or week to week.  I do think that the routine is helpful, but it's very easy to get complacent within that routine if you're not careful.  There are things that just become automatic that you do on a daily basis without hardly putting the slightest bit of thought into them.  Waking up in the morning, however, is not one of them! LOL  I ALWAYS want more sleep when I roll out of bed prior to 5 AM.  Hell, most days I want more sleep on the days I sleep in till 8 or 9, and that's after going to sleep at 11 at the absolute latest!  I've never really been a morning person to begin with, so I'm not really surprised that I'm often tired and longing for more sleep regardless of the time I awaken.  *yawn*

Nonetheless, it is a pretty good day for a Wednesday in the desert land of Iraq.  7 1/2 weeks to go... and there's no sign of it slowing down anytime soon.  We're gaining on February here... the last FULL month of the deployment!  Now... THAT is a GREAT feeling!!! :)

I sure love sleeping in!

It's something you just don't get to do all that often.  Most of us look forward to the weekend to be able to get this extra sleep time. Me, I have Tuesdays and Saturdays.  I suppose it is like having a weekend of sorts.  Tuesdays I go into work at a comfortable 10:30.  It is nice to have this spread out from my day off each week.  It offers a nice little recovery.  Not only that... there are 3 days more and then it's time for another day off. :)

It's almost time to head to work now, though.  It's been a nice enjoyable morning.  I didn't even wake up until around 9, about an hour ago.  I went and got a coffee and ate my breakfast in my room.  I have a nice stockpile of breakfast items saved up here for this express purpose.  Not only that... yogurt and cereal make a really good snack in a pinch, too!

.... and I'm back after a pretty decent day at work.  It went by fast as has been the case with the majority of my now 133 days I've been deployed.  It doesn't hurt that I enjoy doing the job here... that's always a bonus.  I also like the people I work with as well.  If you put all those together it makes for a good working environment.  :)

After work I got back to my room and had some peanut butter and club crackers for a makeshift dinner.  It sounded good to me, and I didn't really feel like the dining hall food tonight.  It works.  I also had a nice little snack of some white chocolate covered pretzels.  Yummy!!!!  I could eat the whole bag of those if I'm not careful! :P  In between the "meals" I got my shower and shave out of the way and went and got some tea.  Yes... I am STILL addicted to the cinnamon orange tea and probably will miss it terribly when I leave here.  I'm sure there's plenty of a similar tea in the U.S. somewhere, though. :)

I also broke my Ipod back out tonight... I've listened to the following this evening... Paul McCartney (Live and Let Die along with My Love)... Matchbox 20 (3 A.M. and Push)... Oasis (Wonderwall)... Live (Selling the Drama)... Goo Goo Dolls (Iris)... and finishing up with some Eagles (Wasted Time)... and then it's time to pack it in for the night.  *yawn*  Yes... It's almost sleepy time.  I also have my morning Skype date with my dear sweet Anne Marie at 5 tomorrow morning.  :)  So... on that note I will bid you all a fine Tuesday night farewell as Don Henley finishes crooning "Wasted Time".

Does the Terrible Towel truly have magical powers???

Hmmmm... it seems ludicrous to believe such a thing doesn't it?  I mean... it's just a yellow cloth with a little writing on it... isn't it?  If it weren't THE "Terrible Towel" you'd probably use it to wipe sweat off of your forehead or to dry some dishes.  It's just an ordinary towel... but yet... if you were where I was in the wee hours of the Iraqi morning you may believe differently.

It is true that the Steelers have lost... even in the playoffs... as I've waved Myron Cope's (rest his soul) Terrible Towel through the air.  They've even lost one... yes, only ONE Super Bowl... while I've been waving said towel.  However, they have won SIX Super Bowls, more than any other team in NFL history.  Is it a coincidence that these famed towels have been waving for every one of them... something that started during the Steel Curtain era of the 1970s?

There were, I would imagine, over 50,000 of these towels waving at Heinz Field on a cold and snowy Saturday evening, so what is so special about MINE?  If this particular towel indeed possesses the powers of magical proportions, does it not make sense that everyone else's towels are just the same?  BUT... then I wouldn't be writing this blog right now because the significance of the whole event wouldn't exist.  :)

So... let us start from the beginning... I wake up at 12:20 AM and make my way to the boy's room and then to the coffee shop for a tasty cup of hot tea.  I am back in my room in bed with the TV on just before kickoff... and the game begins!  Baltimore starts with the ball... and eventually has to punt.  The Steelers proceed to drive the length of the field, capping the drive with a 2 yard touchdown run by Rashard Mendenhall.  BOOM  7-0!  Then something happened... something quite unexpected.  Baltimore drove the length of the field to even the score at 7.  No worries, right?  We'll get it back... it was a good opening drive... even a great one.  Ben drops back... he's hit... looks like a harmless incomplete pass... but wait... a Raven defender picks up the ball that was sitting there motionless for over 3 seconds and trots into the end zone.  The challenge flag is thrown to no avail as the replay clearly indicates it was a fumble.  14-7 Baltimore... all in a matter of 27 seconds' time!  Still... we're ok... it's a one score game... until on the first play of the next drive... Mendenhall fumbles... Ravens ball yet again... and they would make the Steelers pay again.  A touchdown from Flacco to Heap makes it 21-7.  After a Steelers missed field goal just before halftime the score remains 21-7 at the half.

Let's start the second half... Steelers get the bal first.  It's a good opportunity to build some momentum.  They move the ball a little bit and stall out rather quickly and have to punt.  Following the punt... I get up out of bed... and I grab THE TERRIBLE TOWEL off of the top bunk of my bed!  This is where everything changes... Baltimore has the ball... and here we go...

A screen pass to Ray Rice... BOOM... out comes the ball, and the Steelers have it deep in Baltimore territory.  It doesn't take long, after a big run by Mendenhall, for Ben to find Heath Miller in the end zone for the score.  21-14.  Next Baltimore possession... Flacco looking deep for Heap... finds Ryan Clark instead who returns the interception to the Ravens' 25 yard line!  A few plays later... Ben to Hines Ward for the touchdown, and we're tied at 21!!!  Baltimore has the ball once more... surely they're going to move it this time and retake the lead.  It was the second play of the drive... a mishandled snap from center... Flacco fumbles... Steelers recover leading to a field goal by Shaun Suisham, and they take a 24-21 lead.  Oh, but the terrible towel is not done quite yet.  After a couple insignificant possessions the Steelers line up to punt from their end zone (the ball was on the 10).  Baltimore returns it for a touchdown... what a dagger to the heart... but wait... There's a flag on the play... holding on the Ravens at the Steelers 19 wipes the points off the board.  Baltimore is still in business, though, at the Pittsburgh 29.  They move it to the 6.  It's 3rd and goal.  Flacco has his man, Anquan Boldin, he hits him... but the pass is dropped!  Baltimore settles for a field goal.  We're tied at 24.  The Steelers get the ball with about 4 minutes to play.  The drive starts out good... but a sack of Roethlisberger for a 9 yard loss leaves them with 3rd down and 19 from their own 45.  Ben is going deep... WHAT IS HE THINKING???  Just get the first down!!!  It's caught... a perfect strike to the rookie Antonio Brown!!!  It's first and goal at the 5!  After a few tough runs... Mendenhall caps it with the roughest of all of them... and scores from the 2 yard line on a powerful second effort to give the Steelers a 31-24 lead.  The Steelers squib kick the kickoff after a 15 yard penalty, and Baltimore starts at the Pittsburgh 48.  The defense stands tall... one incompletion... then a huge sack... it comes down to 4th and 18... this is it... 1:03 to play.  If they don't make it the game's over.  Flacco has Houshmanzadeh... right in his hands... and he drops it!!!  That's it... the game is over!!!  The final score is 31-24, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to the AFC Championship game for the 4th time in the last 7 years!  :)

Now... do you believe in the power of "THE TERRIBLE TOWEL"????   HERE WE GO STEELERS!!!!  One win away from the Super Bowl!!!  Happy Sunday everyone!

The end of another day off...

... means the beginning of week number 20!  It's been a week that has absolutely flown by.  My day off may have gone by the SLOWEST of any of the days actually, which is just fine by me!  It rained all day today... downpours at times.  I enjoy the rain minus the mud and huge puddles it leaves in it's wake.  It was also pretty cold as it was raining most of the day.  I have to say... using my own feel of weather (which is typically fairly accurate)... it was rather close to being cold enough to snow!  The rain had stopped the last couple times I stepped outside... so perhaps it's over for the time being.

Tonight is a BIG game for the Steelers!  They will be playing the Baltimore Ravens for the 3rd time this season for the opportunity to play in the AFC Championship Game.  If the Steelers can pull it off... they will either go to New England and play another team I really DESPISE... The Patriots... OR... The New York Jets will come to Pittsburgh.  What do those other 3 playoff teams have in common with one another?  ALL 3 of them have BEAT the Steelers this season (we went 1-1 against Baltimore, losing to them at home).  It is rather ironic considering the Steelers' only other loss this season was to the New Orleans Saints, who were also a playoff team (beaten last week).

So... this is a short rainy day blog for this Steelers fan... since I need to try and sleep a few hours before the start of the game, which begins at 12:30 AM here.  Then afterward, I will go back to sleep for a couple more hours... unless for whatever reason I'm wide awake... in which case I will watch the next game. LOL

I will say this much.  It was an enjoyable day off even though I didn't do much.  I'm very relaxed this evening, and for that I am pleased.  :)  So now I will head back to my room for some sleep and then it's going to be time for some FOOTBALL!!!   HERE WE GO STEELERS!!!! HERE WE GO!!!
